Why Work For Our Credit Union?

“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” – Theodore Roosevelt

At SMW, you’re part of a team that is energetic, hardworking and dedicated. We’re proudly building the best possible team to serve the needs of our members.

Our philosophy is member-centric — loyal members are the key to our success, so we are service-oriented team players with strong interpersonal skills, great attitudes and are adaptable to a changing environment.  We hold to the adage “hire for attitude and train for skill.”

Founded on the credit union motto of “people helping people,” we look for candidates who want to make a difference.  We have the tools and training for the right individuals to live our member-centric philosophy — to build trusting relationships and strong financial futures.

Our Mission

Money is personal. Your financial institution should be too.

At SMW Financial Credit Union, we’re here to help people build confidence, create opportunities, and feel supported at every stage of life — whether you’re opening your first account, buying your first home, paying off debt, growing your savings, or planning what’s next.

We believe banking should feel human. That means real conversations, honest guidance, local decision-making, and people who genuinely care about your goals. No confusing jargon. No corporate runaround. Just a team invested in helping our members and communities succeed.

As a community-focused credit union serving Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, and Washington Counties, we’re committed to making a positive impact beyond banking. Through financial education, volunteerism, and personalized service, we work to strengthen the neighborhoods we call home.

Because when our members thrive, our communities thrive too.

Our Story

SMW Financial Credit Union was founded in 1953 with a simple purpose: people helping people. What started as a financial cooperative serving Local 10 union members and their families has grown into a modern, community-driven credit union serving thousands across the Twin Cities metro area.

Over the decades, the St. Paul and Minneapolis Local 10 credit unions joined together to create SMW Financial Credit Union — combining generations of trust, service, and commitment to working families.

As our communities evolved, so did we. In 2006, we expanded our charter to serve Anoka County, and by 2016, membership became available to anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school, or volunteers in Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, or Washington Counties.

Today, we continue to evolve to meet the needs of a new generation of members — offering modern banking solutions backed by personal service and local relationships you can count on.

While technology has changed, our purpose hasn’t: helping people feel financially empowered, connected, and supported.

And no matter where life takes you — new job, new city, new chapter — once you’re a member of SMW, you’re always part of the community.

Once a member, always a member.

Our Values

We strive to live these values each and every day. They are at the foundation of SMW Financial Credit Union and how we do things.

TRUST

A firm belief in the reliability, truth, and ability of our staff to do what is right and find the best solution for our members and our credit union.

“The only way to make a man trustworthy is to trust him.” -  Henry Stimson

Member quote

“34 years as a member and the credit union never let me down, whether in times of need or dreams; always working for me and with me. This year my lifetime dream of a lake home became a reality! Friendly, competitive rates and I truly have friends in the staff of SMW FCU.” – J.S.

EXCELLENCE

Excellence is a talent or quality which is unusually good and so surpasses ordinary standards. It is used as our standard of performance as measured through member loyalty and financial stewardship of our member’s finances.

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their field of endeavor.” – Vince Lombardi

COMPASSION

Life can be hard and we understand things don’t always turn out the way you hoped. We hire people who are empathetic and caring and willing to look for financial solutions to help. We may not be able to give you exactly what you want at the time, however, we will listen and provide guidance on moving forward to a stronger future.

“Look for strength in people, not weakness; good, not evil. You will find what you are looking for.” – Anonymous

“When I first came to SMW, I could not qualify for a car loan.  Jim told me what I needed to do to improve my credit. It took time but eventually I got my loan and today I am co-signing on my son’s car loan. I am proud of what I accomplished. Thank you SMW.” – E.H.

LEADERSHIP

Leadership is the art of motivating people to act towards achieving a goal. We hope to inspire our employees to set personal and professional goals and to help them realize their full potential.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams

COMMITMENT

The quality of being dedicated to a cause. We believe that a credit union serves a higher purpose - not governed by corporate share-holders to maximize profit but by our promise to help people build strong financial futures for themselves and their families.

“It has been a wonderful experience dealing with the SMW FCU crew, they answer all my questions and have been very helpful with my banking needs.” – C.S.
